From a Few Hundred to Thousands: How Much Does a Website Really Cost?

When it comes to pricing websites, the cost often depends on a variety of factors. These can range from the complexity of the design and layout to the features and functionality that you require. Moreover, the prices that you are likely to find online may be confusing or even misleading because different web developers may have different pricing models or offer different services. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the pricing process works to ensure that you get a fair and accurate quote for your website project. If you search online for the cost of a website, you will probably come across a variety of answers. This indicates that your question is not easy to answer. Nevertheless, I will attempt to make the pricing of a website more transparent. I will explain how I calculate website projects and which factors are relevant to me.

basic price + individual requirements

1. What are the costs for a website?

The pricing of websites can vary significantly, with options ranging from £500 to £3,000, or even reaching £10,000. Different web designers have different pricing structures, including hourly rates or project-based pricing. Providing exact figures for website costs is challenging because each client has unique requirements and preferences.

We typically offer project-based pricing for all website projects, regardless of whether it’s a new creation or a relaunch. The cost may differ based on the project’s scope, but we don’t initially distinguish between building a new website and planning a relaunch. This is because relaunching a website often involves a similar amount of work as creating a new one. For a small website like a one-pager, we have a starting price of £899. However, the final price will depend on the project’s scope and specific requirements and will be discussed in advance.

size, preparation, additional services

2. These are cost factors for a website

The cost of a website at the end of the day depends on various factors, with complexity and size being major factors. If a website project will be extensive, requiring multiple subpages or the launch of an e-commerce store, it will involve much more workload compared to creating a chic and simple one-pager. Therefore, the time investment needed to realize a project is an essential factor.

However, if a client has done exemplary preparatory work by developing ideas, concepts, and texts in advance, it can help keep the price down. Don’t get me wrong – we always offer a worry-free package to our clients, but increased work effort will generally result in a higher calculated price.

In addition, incorporating additional tools such as a scheduling calendar, event calendar, or booking system can also increase the total costs. These are added via external providers/plugins. After an initial consultation and before commencing work, a proposal is prepared for the specific project, itemizing all the costs involved. This ensures that there are no surprises when it comes to invoicing.

The answer to that question is yes, by doing it yourself! There are a large number of website builders with which you can create simple websites yourself. What many entrepreneurs fail to consider is that time is valuable. Whether someone is proficient in handling WordPress, templates, or other content management systems and tools, you always need to invest time to familiarize yourself with them. The question then arises: Isn’t it more efficient to focus this time more effectively to do jobs you excel at, enjoy doing, and generate income? Also, keep in mind that an external perspective often helps in structuring your website better, optimizing subpages and content that may not be performing well, and ultimately providing users with a better experience.
